The Marin County District Attorney's domestic violence prosecution team is among the largest units in the District Attorney's office. The 2010 Marin County grand jury reported that family violence has been Marin County’s most reported violent crime for the past twenty (20) years. In response, the District Attorney's office has instituted a program directed at prosecuting people who have been arrested for misdemeanor or felony domestic violence and domestic abuse in Marin County.
A total of eight prosecutors are assigned to prosecute Domestic Violence cases in Marin County. The prosecutions are vertical, which means that the same prosecutor will be assigned to each case through its conclusion. Most police reports involving domestic violence cases in Marin County are reviewed and charged by the coordinating attorney of the Domestic Violence unit.
The Marin County District Attorney's office is charged with prosecuting criminal cases, but also provides training to Marin County law enforcement agencies directed at supporting prosecution.
