California Constitution
The first California Constitution was adopted by the people of the State of California and was effective on November 13, 1849. This constitution was the supreme law of California until the present constitution was adopted in 1879. Only three amendments were made in the thirty (30) years between the adoption of the first California Constitution and the adoption of the present California Constitution. The present California Constitution has been amended more than 460 times since its 1879 adoption. Notably, the California is one of the longest constitutions in the world.
All citizens and residents of California should be acquainted with their state constitution, the United States Constitution and other documents upon which the governments of the United States and California were founded.
